A descendant of seven generations of Rabbis in Denmark, Rabbi Michael Melchior was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1954. Since the early 1970's, young Melchior led some of the first public demonstrations in Western Europe against the oppression of Jews by the Soviet-Union. Throughout the period, he served as one of the international leaders of the Soviet Jewry movement. Until this day Rabbi Melchior is actively involved in the international fight against Anti-Semitism, as well as the absorption of new immigrants from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia in Israel.

Rabbi Melchior studied at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem and in 1980 he received rabbinic ordination from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and leading rabbinic authorities such as Rabbis Ovadia Yosef, Bezalel Z'olti זצ''ל, Simcha Hacohen Kook, and Avigdor Neventzal שליט''א.

In 1986 Rabbi Melchior made Aliya, and he is the Rabbi of Kehilat Talpiyot Hachadasha – Beit Boyer since its inception, as well as being the Chief Rabbi of Norway and Av Beit Din of the Scandinavian Countries. He functioned as the International Director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation. He served for three terms, and amongst his various positions he served as the first Minister of Social and Diaspora Affairs. As such he was the founding Chairman of Birthright Israel. He is an internationally renowned Jewish leader, thinker and activist and a leading advocate for social justice in Israel, interfaith dialogue and a voice for peaceful co-existence.

Rabbi Melchior founded and is the President of the Meitarim Network that establishes inclusive schools, Batei Midrash – a total of 94 educational institutions country-wide today.
